Meet Your Inner Family: An Introduction to Internal Family Systems Therapy
How many of you have seen the movie “Inside Out”? Perhaps you’re a little older and remember the FOX sitcom “Herman’s Head”? What if we told you that both of those forms of media were onto something when it came to our inner voices?
Welcome to internal family systems therapy, a new and innovative form of treatment that allows you to discover and embrace the inner functions of your mind and your full potential. Have a seat, and let’s get into it.
Internal Family Systems Therapy 101
Psychology continues to evolve with new approaches to addressing trauma and anxiety. We all have inner voices and monologues that may help us govern our lives. Dr. Richard Schwartz theorized that the human psyche is composed of multiple “parts,” each serving a distinct role, much like the members of a family. Each part serves a specific role, such as a protector or one who carries unresolved pain or trauma.
However, when all of these parts combine, they form your sense of Self, an entity that embodies qualities such as compassion, wisdom, and calm leadership.
Internal family systems therapy was created to help clients access their whole sense of Self, engage with the sum of all its parts, and help you understand why you function the way that you do.
